There are over 300 dog breeds that are recognized by the World Canine Organization. This is an international federation that is made up of many national dog kennel clubs. It is officially called Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), a French title. The FCI has one of the largest registry of internationally recognized breeds, grouped into 10 categories. These include the terriers, sheep dogs and cattle dogs, companion and toy dogs such as the Shih Tzu and Poodle, Dachshunds, Sighthounds, Retrievers as well as scent hounds, Spitz and primitive types.

How many Dog Breeds exist?

However it is very hard to know how many breeds of dogs exist in the world. This is because:
a) Our canine friends inhabit every part of the Earth. There are dog breeds in some remote parts of our world that haven’t been “discovered”.
b) There are many mongrel dogs (mutt). These are cross-breeds that are not the result of any intentional breeding. Mongrel dogs are not recognized internationally. It is interesting to note that mongrel dogs maybe generally healthier than the popular pure breeds!

A poodle and a white boxer

There are dogs that don’t shed. These, including the Goldendoodle and Bernedoodle, are good for people who get allergic reactions whenever they come into close contact with dogs.

However, some popular dog breeds are not hypoallergenic. These include Shiba Inu, Chihuahua and the Jack Russell terrier.

Some dog breeds have a single coat of hair. Other dogs have a double-coat (fur, in dogs, is usually shorter and denser than hair). The Mexican Hairless (also called Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo) and Chinese Crested dog are hairless!

Some dogs are pure white in color. There are big white dog breeds. There are indoor dogs while others prefer living outdoors. Some breeds such as the Jack Russell terrier were originally bred for hunting while others such as Shih Tzu are companion dogs that spend most of their time indoors. These are some of the many variations observed across the many dog breeds.
